Upcoming Subscription Events
It has only taken us a few years to figure this out, but not everyone
flies by the seat of their pants and occasionally, some like to plan.
So, we have gathered up the family programs from the top venues
around town.  In some cases, tickets are available only on
subscription, for others, individual tickets are now available.

Cal Performances
Cal Performances never fails to have a great season of highly
engaging entertainment and enrichment events.  Beyond music,
dance, drama, and other entertainment, Cal Performances
features great speakers, and other events.  Most interesting is that
they have a School Time series where K-12 classes can see
special performances with presentations by some of the
principals for $4 a head.  It is a truly special program and should
not be missed.

The Family Fare series is a wonderful way to catch top talent at a
reasonable price.  Kids under 16 get in for half price on Family
Fare Performances.  Cal Performances also is launching a series
called First Stage for Families with another slate of great
performances.  Cal Performances' new First Stage For Families
for Families Series is the ideal introduction to the magical world of
music, dance, and theater!  First Stage For Families for Families
features lively one-hour events in Wheeler Auditorium, offering
young people and their grownups an opportunity to experience a
diverse range of artistry in an intimate space.

Cambodia's Khmer Arts Ensemble:  The Lives of Giants
Experimental and spiritual, classical, complex and powerful—
these are just a few of the words that describe the unique work of
choreographer Sophiline Cheam Shapiro. Since 2002, Shapiro
has toured the world with her Khmer Arts Ensemble, dramatically
expanding the repertory of Cambodian dance. In The Lives of
Giants—featuring a company of 36 dancers, instrumentalists, and
singers—a blind and vengeful giant wreaks havoc in the heavens.
When tricked into using his ill-gotten weapon of destruction on
himself, layers of elaborate deception are stripped away and his
treachery is laid bare. "A gorgeous spectacle of contradictory
sensations" (New York Times).

The Cashore Marionettes
Unmatched in artistry, grace, and refinement of movement, the
phenomenal Cashore Marionettes have redefined the art of
puppetry with joyous performances for audiences in Europe, the
Far East, and across North America. Simple Gifts—a "brilliant
production that carries the audience through a range of feelings...
this show is highly recommended even for adults who don't
happen to have kids" (Calgary Herald)—comprises a series of
poignant scenes from everyday life set to music by such
composers as Vivaldi, Strauss, Beethoven, and Copland. Through
a combination of virtuoso manipulation, beautiful music, and
theatrical illusion, Simple Gifts provides an entertaining and poetic
vision of what it is to be human.

Tomáš Kubínek:  Certified Lunatic and Master of the Impossible
The perfect family outing for Thanksgiving weekend! He may be a
bit "unhinged" (and we mean that in the nicest way!), but the one-
and-only Dr. Professor Kubínek is also a comic genius, virtuoso
vaudevillian, and all-round charmer who gives audiences an
utterly joyous experience they'll remember for a lifetime. His
exuberant one-man show is filled with spontaneous wit,
uproarious absurdity, and courageous feats of nonsense, and
has resulted in sold-out engagements on Broadway and around
the world. Needless Risk Taker...Professor of Fantastically
Useless Inventions...Arduous Advocate of The Commonplace
Miracle. There's no one quite like the "hilarious and enormously
talented" (Time Out, London) Tomáš Kubínek.
For ages 5 to 105

Peking Acrobats
Direct from China, the Peking Acrobats—the largest and most
acclaimed group of its kind—have for more than 50 years held
audiences spellbound with vibrant presentations of their ancient
folk art. Carefully selected from the finest acrobat schools in
China, these expert gymnasts, jugglers, cyclists, and tumblers
transform 2,000-year-old athletic disciplines into a family-friendly
kaleidoscope of eye-popping wonder. The performance features
live musical accompaniment from an accomplished Chinese
ensemble, and promises to range "from the seemingly
impossible to the virtually unbelievable" (Los Angeles Times).

(Please note: All children, regardless of age, must have a ticket to
enter the theater; this performance is not suitable for children
under 5.)

has been collecting songs and stories of the Southern Mountains
for over 30 years and is dedicated to performing and preserving
traditional American folk arts and stories. Joyful, funny, and highly
entertaining, Holt plays 10 acoustic instruments and delivers a

Word for Word Performing Arts Company:  Stories from
Sonoma Mountain
San Francisco's acclaimed W4W, which turns works of fiction into
theater without changing a word, presents Stories from Sonoma
Mountain by local Native American author Greg Sarris (whose
short-story collection Grand Avenue was produced as an HBO film
by Robert Redford). Here, Sarris draws on folk tales from the First
Peoples and the landscape of Northern California. Trees,
animals, even the smallest spiders are living spirits with stories
that are important to our survival; while some have special
powers, no one can break the rules of the Earth. "Word for Word's
brilliant inventiveness in performance, choreography, and staging
has created a new art form, and a deeply affecting experience"
(Tobias Wolff).
