Hakone Gardens, Saratoga
21000 Big Basin Way

A trip to Hakone is a trip to a different world. It is marketed as one
of the oldest Japanese estates in the Western hemisphere. The
gardens and walk paths are tranquil and beautiful - especially
when the flowers are blooming. Even if they aren't, it is a worthwhile
visit. Be forewarned, this is a garden, not an amusement park. It is
not for every child, but our child loves Japanese gardens, so it was
a perfect fit. Lots of winding paths, little hidden treasures, and
natural beauty in abundance. Afterwards or before, the town of
Saratoga is very sweet and nice to walk around. Los Gatos is not
far away for more snacking options.

This is the best on-going collection of Egyptian artifacts in the Bay
Area. Housed in a recreation of the Temple of Amon in Karnak, this
museum features the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts in the
Western U.S. and free planetarium shows. They also feature
ongoing presentations about Egyptian culture and practices that
are outstanding. We went there as children and developed a life-
long love for all things Egypt.
