Welcome to the Kiddie
Koncierge Ice Rink Guide!
Updated November 2, 2009
'Tis the season for the winter ice rinks! They are popping up all
over. What better way to get into the spirit of the holidays than to
enjoy some time out in the crisp fall air. If crowds aren't your thing
but you still want to skate, don't forget about the Bay Area's indoor
rinks!
Some tips to increase your enjoyment:
- Dress in layers. There are two reasons for this: 1) It can be
cold, you are on ICE after all. But, once you get moving, you
may want to peel off that parka. 2) more layers = more
padding (thanks, Deb!). Gloves are nice for the hands, a
pair of ski pants keeps the bottom dry, and a few layers of
underwear can pad that bottom nicely.
- Having your beginner flanked by two adults is not as
helpful as you think. We tried this. It actually makes it
harder. It is better to simply hold one hand.
- Bend those knees and keep your weight forward. 'Nuff
said.
- Snacks and Beverages You are exercising, so it helps to
have something to stoke those fires.
- Have Fun!
Outdoor Ice Rinks
11 November 2009 – 3 January 2010
Holiday Ice Rink at Embarcadero Center,
Justin Herman Plaza (adjacent to
Embarcadero 4 and across from the Ferry
Building)
Sunday - Thursday 10:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Friday and Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 p.m.
Skating $9 adults, $5.50 for kids 10 and under. ($0.50 more on
Sundays)
Skate rental $3.50.
The outdoor ice rinks open! Of course, if this warm weather keeps
up, it will be a challenge to keep them frozen! Even if you aren’t a
budding Kimmie Meissner or just think you are, there is something
really nice about skating under the lights to music. They will have
skating clinics and skates for those of you who don’t own your
own. The nice things about this location is that 1) it is BART
accessible, and 2) there is plenty of great places to eat in the area
at all price ranges. The downside is that parking is expensive and
traffic a little hideous.
Note: admission is for a 90 minute skating session.

11 November 2009 - 18 January 2010
Safeway Holiday Ice Rink, Union Square
50 O'Farrell Street, San Francisco
Sunday - Thursday 10:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Friday & Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 p.m.
Adults $9-$9.50, kids $4.50-$5.00, Skate rental $4-$5
After a few minutes of crowds you might be ready for a little air.
Union Square is a beautiful oasis, especially during the holidays.
There is that towering tree surrounded as if in a valley by the walls
of light-bedecked hotels and stores. This year there will be an ice
rink to enjoy under the tree and the dizzying array of lights. Visit
www.unionsquareicerink.com for details
Note: this ice rink is TINY. I mean really tiny. What this means is
that I really wouldn't bother bringing the small kids because they
will have no margin for error. Find a bigger rink. This place is a
fine place if you know a little about skating and just want to skate a
little. Just give up any fantasies of the triple salchow. Not going to
happen.
12 November 2009 – 18 January 2010
Downtown Walnut Creek on Ice, 1365
Civic Drive in Civic Park (at Broadway and
Civic – slightly different location), Walnut
Creek
Monday – Thursday 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Friday & Saturday 11:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.
Sunday 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Hours extend during the holidays
$11 - $15 including skate rental,
We LOVED this rink. Big, not crowded, and very pleasant. Walnut
Creek’s outdoor skating rink is truly lovely. Nestled amidst the
trees (but somehow sunny when the weather calls for it), and
steps from a great playground and the downtown shopping area (if
you can handle the crowds), it is one of the nicer ones. With the
lights in the trees, it will be especially pretty at night. Nothing but
pluses here: parking in Walnut Creek is pretty easy, lessons are
available, and a shuttle serves BART. For details visit http://www.

20 November 2009 – 3 January 2010
Downtown Ice, Circle of Palms, 120 S.
Market Street (between the Fairmont, San
Jose and the San Jose Museum of Art),

Friday 5:00 p.m. – Midnight
Saturday 12 noon – midnight
Sunday 12 noon – 10:00 p.m.
Special hours on holiday weekends
$13 - $15 including skate rental (discounts available for VTA
riders, Tech Museum visitors, Discover Downtown Card holders)
San Jose’s Downtown Ice is Northern California’s answer to the
Rockefeller Center Ice Rink. Nestled in the heart of Downtown
surrounded by palm trees, it must be nice to skate under the stars
were you able to actually see the stars. Downtown San Jose is a
wonderful holiday destination with the Rink, the Winter Wonderland
(details coming soon) and lots of restaurants and other
attractions. For directions, hours, and other details, visit http:

19 November 2009 - 10 January 2010
Dublin Holiday on Ice, Dublin Toyota
Parking Lot, Hacienda Crossings off of i-
580, Dublin
10:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. everyday (you will have to choose your 2
hour slot)
$7-$15/Admission, $3/Skate Rental
The Dublin Rink has you buy tickets for specific time slots. The
good news is that it limits the number of people on the ice (in
theory). The Bad News is that your child will be limited to two
hours on the ice. Of course, you and your child(ren) might be toast
by then anyway. The surroundings are a Toyota dealer parking lot -
not very poetic. For details, visit www.dublinholidayonice.com
19 November 2009 - 10 January 2010
Sharks Winter Rink at Pleasanton, 400 Old
Bernal Road, Pleasanton (between City
Hall and the Library.

30 - 9:30 pm
Weds and Fri 12:15 pm - 2:15 pm, 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm, 5:45 pm - 7:
45 pm, and 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Sat and Sun 10:15 am - 12:15 pm, 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm, 2:45 pm -
4:45 pm, 5:45 pm - 7:45 pm, 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
$12-16 Admission, Including Skate Rental ($2 break for
residents)
Like the Dublin Rink, the Pleasanton Rink has you buy tickets for
specific time slots. The good news is that it limits the number of
people on the ice (in theory). The Bad News is that your child will
be limited to two hours on the ice. Of course, you and your child
(ren) might be toast by then anyway. Downtown Pleasanton is also
a very charming place to walk around (or hobble) afterwards in
search of hot cocoa and snacks. Visit www.
