27-15February 27-March 15
San Francisco Bay Area International Children’s Film
Festival at WonderCon, Moscone Center South and
other Bay Area Venues, Admission (children under 11
free with paid adult admission)
If your kid loves comics or if you are using your kid as an excuse to
attend, this is NorCal’s premiere comics and pop culture
convention.  Yeah, the media and Simpson’s paint this crowd with
a rather pejorative brush, but it can be fun.  Even if you don’t go to
the convention (why would you miss the ComicCon of the North?  If
you pay for one, you get both admissions together), you should
check out the films in the film festival.  They are fresh and fun
movies geared to kids.

The festival will continue with films all day Sunday, March 15 at the
Children’s Discovery Museum in San Jose (
www.cdm.org)

Through March
Marine Mammal Migration, Mating, Birthing, and
more:  Whales and Elephant Seals at the Point Reyes
National Seashore
The Point Reyes National Seashore is one of the few places on the
Pacific Coast where northern elephant seals and gray whales may
be observed and studied. What is more amazing is that Point
Reyes is about 30 minutes from Marin and an hour from SF or the
East Bay.

The elephant seals' semi-annual sojourns to the shores of Point
Reyes provide a unique opportunity to glimpse the lives and
behaviors of these elusive ocean giants. The Elephant Seal
Overlook near Chimney Rocky is a great place for viewing elephant
seals from December through March.  You can see the males
doing their dominance dance and pup birthing.  On weekends and
holidays, docents are available to provide guidance.

During the winter, you can also watch the migration of gray whales
as they make their way to Alaska from Baja.  Peak Southern
Migration is mid-January and the peak Northern Migration is mid-
March.  Late April and Early May offer you the chance to see
mothers and calves close to shore.  Best place to watch is from
areas near Chimney Rock and the Lighthouse

NOTE:  due to traffic concerns, the roads are closed and shuttle
buses from Drakes Beach provide transportation.  For details on
the shuttles, visit
http://www.nps.gov/pore/planyourvisit/shuttle.

gov/pore/planyourvisit/wildlife_viewing_elephantseals.htm

The National Park Service also offers a number of ranger-lead
programs that provide the most informative ways to explore our
friends on the coast.  Click here for more details

jugglers, magicians, ventriloquists, clowns, etc.The Buddy Club
shows are appropriate for all ages and can entertain older kids
and adults as well (this isn’t necessarily baby stuff).  Visit their

Gray’s Harbor Historical Seaport Tall Ships Visit the
Bay Area!
We did this last year.  While we didn't take the three hour tours, we
did have a great time climbing through the ships and talking with
the crews.  Sure the trips can be a little pricey, but you can climb
aboard the square-rig sailing ships, Hawaiian Chieftain and Lady
Washington and learn about maritime history for free (even though
they would appreciate a nominal donation).  If your kid loves pirates
or just loves sailing, this is a trip worth making.  There are four
ways to experience these beautiful ships:
  • Dockside Tour (FREE, but they suggest a donation of $3)
You can tour the ship and hear what it was like to be a
sailor in the 18th century.  Hours for Dockside Tours vary by
day, so check the schedule here http://historicalseaport.
    org/store/ship-dates.php
  • For those of you who really want to full experience, you can
participate in a series of actual sailing adventures (Beware
the “three-hour tour” if the mate is named “Gilligan”):
  • Battle Sail ($40 for children under 12 up to $60 for an
    adult), 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. daily where you will take a three
hour voyage on the Bay where the Hawaiian Chieftain and
the Lady Washington (which actually was used in all the
Pirates of the Caribbean movies) engage in a mock battle
complete with cannons and intricate maneuvering for a
    thrilling adventure.
  • Adventure Sail ($35 for children under 12 up to $55 for an
    adult) 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. daily.  For three hours,
passengers can participate in the operation of an 18th
century tall ship.  You can, if you like, take the helm raise
sails, and hear stories of how these ships sailed the west
    coast in their day.
  • Passage Sails – these trips are for when the ships sail
from one port to the next (from SF to Oakland ($67.50) ,
    from Oakland to Sausalito ($67.50).

So, bone up on your pirate speak
http://www.talklikeapirate.
com/howto.html and check out this cool opportunity.  Call (800)
200-5239 for details or go to
http://historicalseaport.
org/store/ship-dates.php to book a trip and check availability.

Cool Way to Spend a Sunday:
Why not make a day of it in Jack London Square?
  • 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. traipse aboard the tall ships and
share your tales of the high seas with the crew
  • 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. forage for provisions and lunch at
the Jack London Square Farmers Market then stash the
    booty in your car and
  • Take in a Family Jazz Matinée at Yoshi’s!  For $20
($18 when you have an ever so convenient child with you –
who will cost an additional $5), You and the family can take
in a first class performance at an awesome performance
space.  The show begins at 2:00 p.m. but the line begins
before 1:00 p.m.  Here’s a hint:  buy your ticket, wait in line,
get your hand stamped, take the little tags they give you,
mark your seats, and then grab lunch at the restaurant (they
DO have a nice $6 lunch for the kids, but the adult food will
cost you a lot more) or walk across the street to Jack
London Square or to any of the dozens of great restaurants
like E&J’s Barbecue and grab a quick bite there before you
head back.  Of course, the music is top notch and the
performers really play to the audience.

A note on seats:  you CAN go for the café tables near the
stage but they can be uncomfortable and the volume can be
loud.  There are a bunch of booths just behind the café
tables – a lot more comfortable and roomy.  If you can’t quite
get it together to go grab a bite and come back, they DO
have table service with a decent menu.  There is a one drink
minimum – even the kids.  For a complete listing of acts and
to buy tickets (you can buy tickets at the door), visit
http://yoshis.inticketing.com/evlist.php.

NOTE:
if you live in San Francisco, the SF Yoshi’s has a
similar arrangement for Sunday matinees.  For a listing of
SF matinees, check out:
http://sfyoshis2.inticketing.com/evlist.php

For directions to Oakland, visit:
http://www.yoshis.com/oakland/directions

For directions to San Francisco, visit
http://www.yoshis.com/sanfrancisco/directions

Note: Parking at Oakland is pretty easy,  There is a
validated garage right next to Yoshi’s where it will cost
you about $5.75 for lunch and the show.  On a Sunday, you
can also do street parking.

San Francisco’s Yoshi’s has parking under the club.  You
can try your luck on the streets, but that could be
challenging.

1-29Saturdays & Sundays, March 1st – 29th
1:00 p.m. “Aladdin” Young Performers Theater, Fort
Mason Center, Building C, San Francisco $10 adults,
$7 for children under 13

to polish it up and lo and behold, a genie pops out! You'll find
yourself on the magic carpet as you follow Aladdin on his
adventures with the Sultan, Genie and the Sorcerer. There are

Sunday 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Gustafer Yellowgold's Golden Heart Symphony,
Presidio Middle School, 450 30th Ave., San Francisco,
$15
Just who is Gustafer Yellowgold?  To the hipsters, he is the
opening act for Wilco and Polyphonic Spree.  To the kids, however,
he is "a friendly creature who came to Earth from the Sun" who
makes friends with all sorts of creatures on our planet like a
Pterodactyl, a pet eel, and a pet dragon.  They all live in a cozy little
cottage in an uncharted part of Minnesota.  That's the back story.
All of these guys ar ethe creation of Morgan Taylor.  His
performances are a combination of live music and moving image
with captivating music and a terrific multimedia experience for the
entire family.  The New York Times calls it a cross between the
Yellow Submarine and Dr. Seuss.  Bottom line is that these are
terrific shows that should not be missed.

For details on Gustafer Yellowgold, visit the site:
www.
gustaferyellowgold.com.  There you can get the complete story,
some video, music, and more.
