Events
Now through January 6th, “Habitat” Dance Mission Theatre,
3316 24th Street, San Francisco, Matinees 2:00 p.m. Saturday
and Sundays, Evening shows 8:00 p.m. Thu, Fri, Sat.  Children:
$12, Adults $20,
Want to enjoy Cirque du Soleil but don’t like the
ticket prices or being stuck behind a tent pole?  This is your
answer.  Six performers (plus a live band) drawing from the Cirque
and other European-style circuses on a small stage make for a
dazzling experience.  While it may not be great for really small kids
(<3), if your child can sit through a movie, they can enjoy this. A little
more edgy than the Cirque, but definitely a moving experience for
all ages.  Photos, tickets, and show information at
http://www.
sweetcanproductions.com/ 80 minutes.

Thurs – Sun, Dec 28th – 30th 1:00 p.m. Magic Holiday, 1062
Valencia Street, San Francisco, $10,
Two magicians and a
juggler keep audiences engaged with sleight of hand and
downright impossible feats.  Think it is impossible to juggle water
balloons without creating a soggy mess?  Think again.  Suitable
for children OVER 5 and no infants are allowed.  Information and
tickets are available at
http://www.themarsh.org/magic_holiday.html
70 minute show.

Sunday, January 6th, Closing Day at the Steinhart Aquarium, 875
Howard Street, San Francisco (for now) Adults $10, Children 4-
11: $2 BUT you can get free admission with a gift (see details),
In
anticipation of the fall opening of the new California Academy of
Sciences in October, the temporary facility on Howard Street will
close on the 6th.  Closing day will be a party with arts, crafts,
presentations explaining just how they will move everything,
penguin feedings.  You can get FREE admission on closing day by
bringing a gift from the Aquarium’s “Wish list”

Silicon Valley International Auto Show Family Day, SUNDAY,
January 13th, 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Children under 12 FREE with
paying adult ($9)
From personal experience, auto shows are a
pretty good place to take kids (the people who have to clean off
their finger prints may have a different opinion).  They love to climb
all over the vehicles which, thankfully, have all of their horns
disconnected.  For you, as a parent, there are a number of kid-
oriented exhibits and for you as a car-buyer, this is not a bad way to
see the whole field before you get serious.
 http://www.
motortrendautoshows.com/sanjose/  While Family Day is free on
the 13th, kids under 6 are always free and kids 7-12 are $5 at all
other times.

January – March, Ano Nuevo State Reserve Annual Elephant
Seal Mating and Birthing, $6 per vehicle, Guided Tour Tickets are
$5 per person reservations recommended
 Ano Nuevo is a
special place.  It is a hike both literally and figuratively since it is
tucked away on the coast between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz.
That being said, it is worth the drive.  From the moment you arrive,
you can hear the barking of the seals in the sea breeze.  A quick
hike later (you can do a self-guided hike for free between April and
November.  You must be accompanied by a guide during breeding
season), you are a set of bluffs overlooking a beach filled with
barking and belching life.  The adults are gone by March leaving
weaned pups who hang on the beach through April.  Information
on visiting the preserve can be found at
http://parks.ca.gov/default.
asp?page_id=523 with a link on the page to online reservations
(which are a must).  It is recommended that you read this

before calling the reservation line at
(800) 444-4445.

January 26th and 27th, Golden Gate Kennel Club All-Breed Dog
Show, Cow Palace, South San Francisco, Adults $10, children
$5, Families (2 adults + 2 kids): $25,
Looking for a dog?  Well, a
pure-bred, AKC registered dog with champion lineage?  This is
your show.  This is *the* go-to show if you are researching breeds
and wanting to meet breeders.  In between watching the judging (a
la “Best in Show”) and daily “Fly ball demonstrations”, the dogs
and their breeders will be in the exhibition halls so that you can
see the dogs and talk to the experts about them.  There are also
oodles of vendor booths with everything imaginable for your dog.

Museums
Exploratorium
– The sound and automotive exhibits close January
6th and are replaced January 8th by a thought-provoking (sorry)
installation on the mind and how it works.  This show, four years in
the making will explore the mysteries of how your mind handles
the functions of attention, emotion, and judgment through the
Exploratorium’s usual innovative and immersive didactic exhibits.
Information is available at
http://www.exploratorium.edu/mind/index.
html.  There is little there now, but the site will be populated with
more content as the opening draws closer.

Also worth mentioning:  the FIRST WEDNESDAY of every month is
FREE admission.

The
Steinhart Aquarium’s temporary space on Howard Street
CLOSES January 6th until the new California Academy of Sciences
facility in Golden Gate Park opens in October.

From the San Francisco Chronicle
“Ski slopes offer perfect family fun” http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-
bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/12/20/SPLEU18VO.
DTL&hw=family+skiing&sn=001&sc=1000 A pretty good article
with information on improving your fun quotient on family ski trips
as well as a list of family-friendly resorts (well, they all are, but
some are better than others).

“Not your parents' tasting room”, http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-
bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/11/09/WI2DSMESC.
DTL&hw=wine+tasting+with+children&sn=001&sc=1000 So how
many times has your child had to endure the shame of being
carded and turned away from the tasting counter on a trip to
Napa?  Kinda ruined their visit, huh?  In all seriousness, there are
a number of wineries in the area that, while abiding by the law of
land, still have some areas and activities to occupy the children
while the parents swirl and spit.  It lists some of the 23 or so
wineries in the area that consider themselves family friendly.
Some, like Trefethen, produce some outstanding wine.  The article
also lists some tips on what the author calls “Whine-free wine
tasting.”  Well-worth reading.  Yet another way to remind yourself
that you are still an adult while providing your kid with a fun time.
As an aside, a visit to Taylor’s Refresher in Saint Helena is a nice
way to reward good behavior...
