Events
Saturdays and Sundays, January 19- February 10th 1:00 p.m.
“Rapunzel” Young Performers Theater, Fort Mason Center,
Building C, San Francisco $9 adults, $6 for children under 13
You know the story, but maybe your kids don’t. This is that classic
Grimm’s fairy tale of the young lady banished to the tower due to
the bad decisions of her parents and the hair-obsessed prince
who saves her. My summary of the story aside, this group does
very nice children’s theater and is worth checking out.
Tickets and reservations at http://www.ypt.org/tickets.htm and
directions can be found at http://www.ypt.org/map.htm
Saturday, January 12th, 4:30 – 7:15 p.m. Alcatraz Kidz Tourz,
“Pirates, Rebels and Spies” Adults $31.50, kids 12-17 $30.50,
kids 5-11 are $18.75, and kids 4 and under are free This special
family-oriented program combines the usual ferry cruise to the
island and jail tour with kids-oriented history tours, specialty
programs, and special activities. Make sure that you book the 4:30
cruise and bring warm clothes as it gets cold. More information
can be found here http://www.alcatrazcruises.
com/website/pprog-kidz-tourz.aspx If you go at this or any other
time, ask for your Junior Ranger booklet at the dock from any
ranger. Once completed, give it to a ranger at the dock to be sworn
in and have your certificate stamped. And no, it is NOT
recommended that you leave your child there.
Friday, January 18th 5:00 – 10:00 p.m. Cultural Encounters:
Friday Nights at the de Young $10 adults, $6 kids 13-17, FREE for
kids 12 and under Friday nights, the museum is open late and the
de Young folks spice things up with music, film, dance, and
special events. You can get dinner and cocktails at the cafe to
make an evening of it. To make this a family event, there are
hands-on art making activities for kids and adults. This first night
of their third season features a collage postcard project and live
music by eight jazz ensembles that will play original musical
compositions inspired by works in the galleries. http://www.
famsf.org/deyoung/calendar/day.asp?
categoryid=32&calendarid=3622&day=1%2F4%2F2008
Don’t forget the Saturdays at the de Young program which
combines docent tours with artist-supervised art projects on
Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. a
schedule of programs can be found at http://www.famsf.
org/deyoung/calendar/day.asp?categoryid=30 For a reward, you
can march the little artists across JFK Drive to the Koret
Playground to get some ya-yas out.
Saturday, January 26th 11:00 a.m. and 5:00p.m. and Sunday,
January 27th 2:00 p.m. New Pickle Circus Performance at the
Jewish Community Center San Francisco, California at Presidio,
Adults $20, Children under 12 $15. The Pickle Family Circus is an
off-shoot from the Circus School of San Francisco. The
performers take acrobatic circus skills with a bit of and edge to
make a truly entertaining family event. Audiences love their
innovative performances. We saw them at a benefit and their
piece was the highlight of an amazing show. Tickets http://www.

Saturday, January 26th, 11:00a.m. Kronos Quartet Family
Matinee, Herbst Theater, 401 Van Ness, San Francisco, Adults
$18, kids $10 The Kronos Quartet will be doing a family matinee
with a one-hour show – perfect for younger kids with short attention
spans. For those of you who do not know them, the Kornos
Quartet’s music is an adventure in classical music to say the
least. Some would call it an acquired taste others would call it
inspired. They are amazing and bring an astonishing versatility to
their instruments. You would be amazed to find out who they have
performed with and where you have heard their music: NIN, Tom
Waits, on the Jimi Hendrix tribute compilation playing Purple Haze
(you know what? I loved this piece). Seriously. At this price, it is a
bargain. To read more, check out their site at http://www.
kronosquartet.org/. You can also hear clips and follow links to
their myspace and facebook pages. Tickets to the matinee can be
found at http://www.performances.

demonstrations, Q&As, and other activities to get girls fired up
about scientific and technology careers. Middle and High School

girlscoutsbayarea.
org/documents/GGT_Older_Girl_Recruitment_Flyer_2008.pdf , a
Q&A session where you can talk to professionals in a range of
career areas talk about their jobs and how they got there. College

Saturday, February 2nd, 10:30 p.m. Chinese New Year Mini-
Parade, San Francisco FREE If crowds aren’t your thing, and you
still want to ring in the year of the rat, come check out this smaller
version of the Chinese New Year parade that follows 3 weeks
later. This one starts at California and Grant and follows Grant to
the stage at Jackson. Four blocks later. Once you finish with the
parade, you can visit the Flower Fair on Grant from Broadway to
Clay; Pacific Ave. from Stockton to Kearny, and Jackson between
Stockton and Kearny where you can buy flowers, plants, fruits and
candies and enjoy activities and entertainment from 10:00 a.m. -9:
00 p.m. and also on Sunday from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. (no parade
on Sunday)
Saturday, February 23rd, 5:30 p.m. Chinese New Year Parade,
San Francisco FREE Gung Hee Fat Choy! Celebrate the Lunar
Year 4706, the year of the Rat! This is the big parade. Come early
and take public transportation as the crowds can be fierce. The
Route starts at Market and snakes through Downtown ending up
on Kearny between Washington and Jackson. If the map below is
not supported by your email browser, click here http://www.
chineseparade.com/route.asp (you DO NOT need to install the
Adobe Flash Player to view the map)
For viewing, forget about Market Street, Geary Street or Union
Square, the crowds are crazy. Instead, Post Street tends to be a
little more civilized and you might even be able to pull up a curb for
a seat.
Parking is probably best at the Mission and Fifth garage as getting
to Ellis/O’Farrell, Union Square, Sutter Stockton or Portsmouth will
be all but impossible (let alone getting out).
Either before or after the parade, check out the Chinatown
Community Street Fair on Grant from Broadway to Clay; Pacific
Ave. from Stockton to Kearny, and Jackson between Stockton and
Kearny where you can experience Chinese cultural
demonstrations and performances including lion dancing, martial
arts, calligraphy, traditional dance, and puppet shows. The Fair is
Saturday, the 23rd from 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and Sunday,
February 24th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (no parade on Sunday).
Something Special
Sunday June 22- Saturday, June 28, 2008, “Launch into
Technology at NASA,” residential program at NASA Ames While
you are thinking about summer camps for your kids, don’t forget
the older sibs. In particular, the Girls Scouts and NASA are
sponsoring a week-long residential program at the NASA Ames
Center. Geared for girls entering 9-12th grade in Fall, 2008, there
are three tracks: Aeronautics, Robotics, and Astrobiology. The
days are filled with immersive, hands-on demonstrations in their
field of interest. The evenings are filled with activities and projects
to enjoy with your new friends. Check out the Girls Go Tech page
for more information (also check out their flier – no pun intended –
at http://www.girlscoutsbayarea.
org/documents/GGT_Flyer_NASA_AMES_2008.pdf). Email
jean@girlscoutsbayarea.org or call (510) 562-8470, ext. 246 for
details and registraion.
That's it for now! Please feel free to submit any events that you
